Lady Bird launch first single on Slaves own label Girl Fight Records

Words: Ellie Ward

Slaves have hit 2018 running with the Kent duo launching their own record label, Girl Fight Records - named after the raucous 15-second track on the band’s debut mini-album.

The first signing is fellow Tunbridge Wells trio Lady Bird. The punk three-piece today release their debut single ‘Spoons’ - an ode on reflection of a night out in a branch of a certain pub chain - on the label.

"It’s an encapsulation of a confused young man in a world he doesn’t really understand and he’s found himself in ‘Spoons,” says the band's guitarist Alex Deadman. “The main character is a traditional geezer, but he’s vulnerable. It’s not based on anyone in particular, but I think we could all identify.”

The label, says Slaves' Laurie Vincent, is, "not about modelling ourselves against anyone, it’s us putting our mark on the industry. Me and Isaac, I like to think we’re purists. We didn’t form a band to copy anyone else and we’ve never done anything to be like anyone else. This is just something we wanna do and Lady Bird are the first of that.”

Lady Bird play a BBC Introducing show at The Lexington in London on February 1.

Lady Bird are: Don Rennols (vocals/guitar/organ), Alex Deadman (guitar), Joe Walker (drums)
